Quarry Number Two
2024
A a resilient family home set within dense bushland on the edge of a ridge line in Sydney’s north-west. The design responds carefully to aspect, topography and passive solar principles, while navigating the constraints of BAL Flame Zone and BAL 40 bushfire requirements.
The external form is robust and protective, shaped by regulatory setbacks and bushfire controls, yet carefully articulated with generous openings that frame views and admit light. Internally, this toughness gives way to a softer, more intimate environment defined by crafted native timber linings and the client’s blue-themed interiors.
A stepped floor plan follows the sloping site, grounding the building within the landscape and allowing subtle shifts in roof pitch to keep the triple-gable form in balance with its natural context. The house is organised into three zones of increasing privacy, with the main living areas oriented north for passive solar gain, outlooks to the south, and strong cross-ventilation, assisted by the sheltering bedroom wing.
Zincalume rooflines and galvanised steel detailing reference traditional rural vernacular, reinforcing the home’s practical, resilient character while supporting generous, light-filled internal spaces.
